The ambition of the project is to deliver high quality learning environments for the Rumi Schools of Excellence situated in high density urban areas of low-income communities. Demand has led to the need to turn existing buildings into schools. The result is poor teaching environments, little to no daylight, poor ventilation and acoustic separation; Rigid, overcrowded classrooms with inadequate learning and teaching aids further contribute to an environment unsuitable to learning. Central to the proposal is a set of cards which would be used to communicate the relative merits and demerits of each system or enhancement. These include water harvesting, storage solutions and ventilation strategies. The cards, translated in Hindi, are a tool which will be used to communicate design solutions to Rumi Schools of Excellence, teachers, school owners and other stakeholders, and ultimately empower them with good understanding of applicable design, respective benefits and cost.
